Common mistakes when using a storage unit (and how to avoid them)

Having a storage unit can be a real lifesaver. It gives you space, order and peace of mind. But not everything goes when it comes to using one. A poorly used storage unit can easily become an extension of the chaos at home: accumulated items, disorder, forgotten objects, and the feeling that instead of freeing up space, you’ve only moved the problem elsewhere.

At CABE Trasteros, we see it all the time: people with the best intentions who, through lack of planning or information, end up wasting their storage space or even damaging what they store.

That’s why we’ve put together the most common mistakes when using a storage unit – and how to avoid them so you can make the most of it.

1. Storing without thinking (or sorting). One of the most common mistakes is putting everything in at once, without order or logic. It’s tempting: you arrive with boxes, bags and furniture, and leave it all wherever it fits. But this only creates a maze you won’t easily escape from next time you need something. How to avoid it? Before storing, sort. Group by type (clothes, tools, keepsakes, decorations…), label boxes clearly and plan a layout that allows easy access to frequently used items. An organised storage unit is a useful storage unit.

2. Using unsuitable materials. Thin cardboard boxes, open plastic bags, unprotected furniture… Many people store their belongings without considering time, humidity or dust. The solution: use sturdy boxes (preferably airtight plastic ones), protective covers for mattresses, sofas or clothes, and raise items off the ground if possible. That way you’ll avoid nasty surprises when you come back for your things.

3. Storing things you no longer need. A storage unit isn’t an emotional dumping ground. Keeping items you don’t use, don’t work, or know you’ll never need again only fills the space unnecessarily. What to do? Be honest with yourself. If you haven’t used it in over a year and it has no sentimental or practical value, it probably doesn’t deserve to take up space. Donating, selling or recycling is also a way of organising.

4. Not leaving space to move around. Filling a unit to the ceiling might seem efficient… until you need something at the back. Stacking without leaving aisles or access gaps will only cause frustration and wasted time. Helpful tip: leave at least a small central aisle or a front gap so you can step in and check without having to dismantle everything. Think of your storage unit as a mini room, not a container.

5. Not making an inventory (or remembering what you’ve stored). It happens more often than you’d think: forgotten boxes, duplicated objects, even unnecessary purchases because “I didn’t know I already had one in storage”. Avoid this by creating a simple inventory. It doesn’t have to be a perfect spreadsheet – a quick note on your phone or a sheet on the door of the unit works fine. You can also take photos of what you store to keep it all handy.

In short: a storage unit can be order – if you are too. It isn’t a junk drawer. It’s a smart extension of your home. But for it to work that way, it’s important to avoid these mistakes and use it logically. Order begins the moment you decide what to store and how to do it.

At CABE Trasteros, we make it easy. Clean, secure and accessible spaces where you can organise your belongings without giving up anything. And if you need advice on how to make the best use of your space, we’re here to help.

Your storage unit can be much more than a warehouse. It can be order, peace and mental space. You just need to use it well.
