Storing “souvenirs”: because not everything deserves a place at home

Over time, it’s easy to start accumulating objects brought back from trips, celebrations or special moments. So-called “souvenirs” arrive with the intention of preserving a memory, but often end up forgotten on shelves or in drawers, losing their meaning and taking up space that could be dedicated to what really matters. What once represented an emotion can, with the years, become an obstacle to order and functionality in the home.

The attachment we feel towards these objects usually has less to do with their usefulness than with the emotional weight we place on them. We think that if we let them go, we’ll forget the experiences. But the truth is, memories don’t need a physical support to remain alive. When we accumulate without criteria, the home stops being a reflection of who we are today and becomes a container of who we used to be. This affects not only physical space, but also mental space: a saturated environment generates stress, distraction and a constant sense of disorder.

That’s why it’s important to review what we keep and why we keep it. It’s not about throwing things away for the sake of it, but about holding on to what is meaningful. Sometimes a photo of the object is enough to keep the memory alive. Other times, choosing one or two items that represent a period allows us to let go of the rest more easily. Freeing up space also frees up energy, allowing the home to become once again functional, harmonious and aligned with the present.

At CABE Trasteros, we believe that living with less doesn’t mean giving up your memories, but knowing which ones you want to carry with you. That’s why we offer safe, accessible spaces to store what still has value, without sacrificing order or peace of mind at home.
